Winterville opened its gates yesterday, signalling the start of Christmas in Tower Hamlets.

Victoria Park has been transformed into the magical town of Winterville, a new Christmas festival that offers an exciting array of attractions and entertainment. The opening saw friends and families of all ages enjoying a new type of festive experience.

Entry and a range of entertainment in the festive pop-up town is free of charge at this “antithesis of corporate Christmas theme parks

Ella McWilliam, co-director of Full Fat public relations, said: “East London really needed something like this, and we’ve tried to make it as accessible as possible.”

The pop-up town boasts more than just conventional theme park rides. A roller disco, a dedicated craft beer area and a Kids Quarter are just some of the things on offer. Winterville is also home to some of the big names in London street food such as Voodoo Rays Pizza and Wholefood Heaven who specialise in vegan, vegetarian, raw and wheat and gluten-free food.

The Pearly King and Queen of Tower Hamlets, inherent representatives of the longstanding London tradition and charitable organisation, were invited to celebrate the Winterville launch.

Lorraine Sadler, Pearly Queen of Tower Hamlets said: “I love Christmas … It’s about family and it’s the only time of the year when you really get everyone together. This is our first time here; we’ll come with warmer clothes for next year.”

Of the many attractions on offer, The Wall of Death, London’s only gravity-defying motordrome is one to watch for thrill seekers. Mulled wine, hot cider and a pantomime are also on the cards for anyone wanting a more conventional winter experience.

Winterville is open now and will run until January 1, 2015. More information and ticket purchases can be found here.
